'Birdsong' was inspired by the Tui that live in the trees around my studio who often seem to sing louder to compete with my radio.
Over time I have considered the challenges our native birds have faced since colonization and wondered what a world without birdsong would be like.
The iconic Tui in a midnight garden of roses creates a striking image. Tui, singing at night, is a way of asking the viewer to consider a life without birdsong. The gold leaf 'song' swirling into the darkness is a way of acknowledging and celebrating the resilience of this beautiful native bird.
